If you're involved in the purchase or sale of a home with a private well, here are a few tips that may help you get good results on any required water tests.
- Prior to testing have the well and equipment chlorinated and thoroughly flushed by a professional affiliated with a state-certified water testing lab.
- Prior to the day of testing, make sure the water has been allowed to run for at least 30 minutes. The Lead content of water left standing in copper plumbing is often very high. In addition to causing a failing water test, this water is not safe to drink.
- Have the water samples collected by someone affiliated with a state-certified lab.
- Ask the person collecting the water what their policy is if the water is contaminated. Do they charge for re-testing? Do they know how to remediate problem wells?
